Jackie Norman - Colourful Semi-Impressionist Artist
BACKGROUND AND WORK LIFE
Jackie Norman was born in London into two wider families on both sides and as a child she learned to draw primarily from life and from colour/trace books. Even at that early age, she was fascinated by perspective and portraits and she remembers getting her first water colour box at the age of 9 as a prize from the school in London . Moving to Slough in 1966 with her immediate family there was a fresh start. After receiving secondary school education she trained at college, then worked before doing more retraining. Also she was greatly inspired by the Impressionists and especially Toulouse Lautrec. Originally she had a commercial working background working in offices but changed later on in life.
She was always painting/drawing as a hobbyist and took classes in the evening to increase her skills. She travelled to Jersey and eventually, Israel, which changed her life as it was then she became a Christian, which was a turning point. In the 1980's she retrained at Art School at Berkshire College of Art and Design. where she earned a lot about illustration, drawing techniques, painting, calligraphy, printing, illustration and typography. She worked in design offices and as an in-house designer. However, at that time, due to recession, she had to take other work.
in 1990 while temping at the local college, she met and married her husband Dave, a fellow artist and have two grown-up children. Both joined Slough Art Society networking with other artists and exhibited at various places. As well as this she studied web-design - learning Dreamweaver II, Frontpage and Flash. While the children grew up, she worked in St Mary's School for 18 years supporting children with their learning, especially SEN children on a 1-1 basis. During those years I she designed display boards, backdrops for plays, productions, stage make-up and plays and she was greatly used in art lessons, helping children draw.. In addition, I she studied NVQ in supporting teachers plus accredited training.

Jackie paints in a wide variety of materials including acrylics, some acrylic pour, oils, watercolour and pastels. plus encaustic (hot wax), marbling, journaling and collage.

CURRENTLY
After taking early retirement in December 2018 Jackie really started to rekindle her painting and drawing skills. She has been studying an art mentoring course, which is Created to Thrive and the Experience Course from Matt Tommey, which has been a transformational journey. Experimenting with different techniques and processes have been part of this as she rekindled her encaustic art skills, marbling and charcoal drawing. She had travelled to Croatia earlier in 2019 and also the United States on a conference. Recently she had been working in a secondary school where, watching the children create, she has experimented somewhat herself. She has travelled to parts of the UK, France, Spain, Budapest, Prague, Malta, Italy, Amsterdam, Romania and the USA.

Jackie is a versatile artist who paints in a semi-impressionist style, who is inspired to create paintings that are full of intriguing stories and usually in bright vibrant colours. She uses a range of materials, however acrylics predominate. There are also pen/ink drawings, pastels, watercolour and also encaustic, which is hot wax. She is dedicated to providing the very best in terms of quality. and spends time getting both the composition, design and construction right. There are a wide contrast of different genres and interests for people but where possible, every picture tells a a unique story. She aims to challenge and stimulate the viewer and she hopes to help in any way shecan. Does the piece give you an emotional connection or provide a memory for you, different to the way a photograph does? Does the colour stimulate your senses? Is it conceptual and thought-provoking for you?
